Базарда
At the bazaar
The bazaar (базар) is the heart of any Kazakh town. Friendly bargaining is normal — but always polite, never aggressive. Use formal "сіз" with vendors, especially older ones.

Bargaining is expected — gently
Vendors often start a touch high, expecting a small back-and-forth. A friendly "арзанырақ болмай ма?" works wonders. Never haggle aggressively or insult the produce — that's where it crosses the line.
Use the formal "сіз"
Always address vendors with the formal "сіз" form, especially older women. Calling an older woman "апа" or an older man "ағай" is respectful and friendly.
Cash and small bills
Many small vendors only take cash (теңге). Carry small bills — they make change for tiny purchases easier and are appreciated.
Weight, not pieces
Most produce (apples, tomatoes, potatoes) is sold by weight — kilograms (кило). Don't ask for "five apples"; ask for half a kilo (жарты кило) or one kilo (бір кило).
