Plurals — лар, лер, дар, дер, тар, тер
BasicsOne plural suffix, six spellings. Vowel harmony picks the vowel; the word's last consonant picks the first letter. This same two-step logic returns in almost every other suffix.
The rule
Step 1 — vowel harmony: back word → -лар/-дар/-тар, front word → -лер/-дер/-тер.
Step 2 — look at the word's final sound:
Vowel, or й, р, у → -лар/-лер: бала → балалар, үй → үйлер
л, м, н, ң, з, ж → -дар/-дер: гүл → гүлдер, мұғалім → мұғалімдер, қыз → қыздар
Any voiceless consonant (п, т, қ, к, с, ш…) → -тар/-тер: кітап → кітаптар, дос → достар
Why? Kazakh avoids awkward consonant clashes — the suffix's first letter assimilates to whatever it lands on. You will meet exactly the same д/т split again in the case endings.
