Saying no — verb negation, емес and жоқ

Beginner

Kazakh has three different "not"s, and they are not interchangeable: a suffix inside the verb, емес after nouns and adjectives, and жоқ for things that don't exist.

Explanation

1 — Negating a verb: -ма/-ме/-ба/-бе/-па/-пе

The negative suffix slips in right after the verb stem, before the tense ending. The variant follows the familiar rule (vowel/л/р/у/й → ма/ме; м/н/ң/з/ж → ба/бе; voiceless → па/пе):

бар- (go) → бармаймын — I don't go / I'm not going
кел- (come) → келмейді — he doesn't come
біл- (know) → білмеймін — I don't know
іш- (drink) → ішпеймін — I don't drink
жаз- (write) → жазбаймын — I don't write

Explanation

2 — емес: "is not"

To negate a noun or adjective ("this is not…"), put емес after it. Personal endings attach to емес, not to the noun:

Бұл қымбат емес. — This is not expensive.
Мен мұғалім емеспін. — I am not a teacher.
Ол қиын емес. — It is not difficult.

Explanation

3 — жоқ: "there is no"

жоқ negates existence and possession — the opposite of бар:

Уақыт жоқ. — There is no time.
Менде ақша жоқ. — I have no money.
Үйде ешкім жоқ. — There is nobody home.

жоқ is also the plain answer "no" (иә = yes, жоқ = no).
